Cannamom Break Stereotypes?
Sometimes I’m offered writing assignments that are outside my realm of expertise and stretch my comfort zone. Like the time I bluffed my way into writing about world-class ski jumping in Germany without any actual leads or contacts, and then had to scramble like crazy when an editor bit on the pitch.
But I’m fatefully curious, so I tend to accept assignments unless it’s already been proven that I suck at covering the topic. (Fashion quickly comes to mind!) Writing about cannabis has been one of those situations, except I didn’t seek it out. The first gig just happened to come my way. And then more followed.
I don’t respond well to drugs in general—like the time I was tripping so hard on a routine painkiller during childbirth that I almost missed the window for an epidural—so I’m super wary of random experimentation. On the other hand, I am a huge adventurer in other ways … and recreational marijuana is legal in my state … and the people I’ve met through these assignments have invariably been wonderful to work with.
Which is a lot of backstory to introduce Kimberlee Kesterson and Jessica Carroll, the co-founders of STL Cannamoms. Again, I don’t have cannabis experience, but moms groups? Oh yeah.
I’m grateful that St. Louis Magazine has given me the opportunity to explore this new topic, and I’m especially grateful to Kim and Jessica for being such authentic, open humans and helping so many of their fellow moms find support and acceptance. When I texted Jessica the link to the story earlier today, she replied, “Ya got me to tear up. Thanks again.”
It’s such an honor to be able to do what I do. And now who’s tearing up??? I better go do something about this darn dust …
